It is all too true that when you loose your job your "status" in your community also suffers. People don't know what to do when one of their own (friend, co-worker) find themselves unemployed and struggling. I think it has a lot to do with the loss of social networks - no more going to the annual conference or other office events and social engagements become uncommon as the relationships then become awkward (if you can even afford to attend now that you are underemployed).
Not a new problem I'm afraid... just more people, more unemployment, and a loss of community overall.
You have gained a new understanding and a new sense of yourself. Your continued uphill battle will benefit you in the end. To heck with the rest of them...
